Children may be affected by abuse within the home and by harmful behaviours linked to honour, control, family pressure, and community expectations. Domestic abuse can affect children even when they are not the direct target, and honour-based abuse may involve coercion, intimidation, isolation, threats, or control linked to perceived family or community honour.
This session helps school staff understand the context of domestic abuse and honour-based abuse, recognise signs and indicators in pupils, and respond in ways that support early intervention. It explores how abuse can affect attendance, behaviour, concentration, emotional wellbeing, disclosure, and relationships in school, and why concerns should never be dismissed or minimised.
Staff will reflect on barriers to disclosure, professional curiosity, and how to use timely recording, referral and escalation to secure early help and safeguard children effectively. The session also considers the importance of culturally informed practice that does not excuse harm, alongside the need to challenge assumptions and ensure the child’s voice remains central.
